What is IPL Mini Auction?
The IPL Mini Auction is held annually between mega auction cycles. Teams retain most of their core players and use the auction to fill remaining slots.
In a mini auction, teams can retain up to 6 players using a combination of direct retentions and RTM (Right to Match) cards. The remaining purse after retentions is used for bidding on the available player pool.
Mini auctions typically feature 300-400 players including released players from teams, new entrants, and international stars. The auction is usually completed in a single day.
What is IPL Mega Auction?
The IPL Mega Auction occurs every 3-4 years when teams are required to release most of their players and rebuild their squads almost from scratch.
Teams can only retain 2-4 players in a mega auction, with significant deductions from their ₹120 Crore purse. This creates a level playing field and allows all franchises to compete for top talent.
Mega auctions are marathon events spanning 2-3 days with 500+ players up for bidding. They produce the most dramatic moments in IPL history, with record-breaking bids and surprise picks.
